NHS Global Health Insurance Card

It has been a while since we have travelled to Europe with our caravan and since this year will be the first time we are doing so since Brexit and the start of the Coronavirus pandemic I decided to check on some of the ‘taken for granted’ docmentation.

One of the items that I had forgotten about that has expired is our European Health Insurance Cards also known as E 111. As Brexit has now occurred and new regulations are in force I now have to apply for a new NHS Global Health Insurance Card.

If you are still in possession of a valid EHIC (E111) it will remain valid and acceptable throughout Europe until its expiry date. If you are worried that your card will expire whilst away then you are permitted to renew it up to 6 months prior to its expiration date. It will be then converted to a Global Health Insurance Card (depending on your residential status).

If you are considering applying for or renewing your NHS Health Insurance Cards, remember that this is a free service provided by the NHS. Do not get caught by third-party firms who offer to do this for you at a fee. The process is incredibly simple and all you need is some basic information including your National Insurance Number.
